Android 17 Launches with Bubbles, Screen Reactions, and Enhanced Security Features

Google has officially released Android 17, a major operating system update bringing productivity, entertainment, security and safety enhancements to Android devices. The rollout began with Google Pixel devices on June 16, 2026, with availability expanding to other eligible Android devices throughout 2026. Select advanced devices will receive Gemini Intelligence later in the summer to help users work more proactively throughout their day.

Android 17 introduces several flagship features designed to improve multitasking and user experience. Bubbles allows users to convert any app into a compact floating window by long-pressing an app icon, enabling seamless multitasking without leaving the current app. On large-screen devices, bubbles dock in a dedicated bar at the bottom for quick switching between applications. Screen Reactions enable users to record themselves via the device's selfie camera while simultaneously capturing their phone screen, allowing for quick perspective-sharing on sites, apps and trending videos without requiring external tools. For gaming enthusiasts, foldable devices now feature an optimized 50/50 layout with a game view on top and dynamic gamepad below, with reduced frame drops achieved through more efficient memory cleanup.

Security and privacy improvements represent another major focus of Android 17. The update includes granular location-sharing controls, allowing users to grant apps temporary access to precise location data. Users can now share only specific contacts rather than their entire address book. The enhanced "Mark as lost" feature in Find Hub enables users to lock missing phones using biometrics, preventing access even if a thief has the passcode. Live Threat Detection has been improved to block more suspicious apps and scams, while Advanced Protection mode offers enhanced defense against sophisticated threats. Additional security measures include reduced PIN-guessing attempts and longer wait times between failed login attempts.

Additional features rolling out with Android 17 include the ability to hide app names on the home screen, expanded Parental Controls across all Android devices, dedicated volume control for the assistant, and greater control over dark theme expansion. Under the hood, the operating system introduces app memory limits to prevent excessive RAM usage, improving overall device performance and battery life. Pixel devices are receiving supplementary updates alongside the main Android 17 release.
