Paul Merson Blames Late Skin Cancer Diagnosis on Masculinity and Negligence

Former England footballer and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has attributed his late diagnosis of skin cancer to societal expectations of masculinity and personal negligence. Merson, who revealed he was diagnosed with melanoma in 2012, admitted that he delayed seeking medical attention for a bleeding mole on his back for months, despite his child noticing the abnormality. He acknowledged that he never used sunscreen during his professional football career and described himself as a "sun worshipper" who felt better with a tan.

Merson said that "being a man" and fear contributed to his reluctance to get the mole checked. He described the delay as a result of "pure laziness" and noted that doctors warned him a further two or three months' delay would have made treatment impossible. After finally visiting a doctor, the mole was surgically removed, leaving him with 50 stitches, and was diagnosed as melanoma.

The incident highlights the dangers of ignoring health warnings and the impact of masculine stereotypes on health-seeking behavior. Merson's story serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of regular skin checks and sun protection, especially for individuals who have spent significant time outdoors or in the sun.
