BEIJING, June 18 — Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, has called on Party members to carry forward revolutionary traditions and strive for new accomplishments, in a reply letter to Zhang Liansheng, a 102-year-old veteran Party member employed by Xinhua News Agency. The message was released ahead of the CPC's 105th founding anniversary on July 1.
In his letter, Xi extended greetings to Zhang and veteran Party members across the country, acknowledging Zhang's decades of service to the Party. Xi highlighted Zhang's role as a radio operator with the "Fourth Brigade," a Xinhua working team that accompanied the Party Central Committee and Mao Zedong through northern Shaanxi during the War of Liberation approximately eight decades ago. Zhang devoted his entire career to communications technology and continues to care deeply about the Party's cause and the country's future.
"I would like to express my respect to you," Xi wrote, praising Zhang's profound love for and faith in the Party. Xi emphasized the importance of all Party members never forgetting their original aspiration and founding mission. He called on them to faithfully perform their duties, work diligently, and take responsibility for advancing the Party's objectives in the current era.
Why This Matters
Xi's public letter reinforces the CPC's emphasis on historical continuity and ideological discipline ahead of a significant Party anniversary. By spotlighting a century-old veteran who directly served Mao's era, Xi sends a symbolic message about institutional memory and commitment to original Party principles—key themes for maintaining internal cohesion and legitimacy as the Party navigates contemporary challenges.
