Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė and her entire cabinet resigned on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, following a significant reshuffle of the country's ruling coalition. President Gitanas Nausėda accepted the resignation and has asked the outgoing government to continue in a caretaker capacity until a new cabinet is formed.
The resignation came after the center-left Social Democratic Party ended its coalition agreement with the populist Nemuno Aušra party earlier this month. The decision was prompted by allegations of antisemitic rhetoric against Remigijus Žemaitaitis, a former lawmaker associated with the party, who was fined 5,000 euros (approximately $5,800) last year for inciting hatred against Jews, downplaying Nazi crimes, and minimizing the Holocaust in social media posts. The case is currently under appeal.
Under Lithuanian law, President Nausėda has 15 days to nominate a candidate for prime minister, who must then be approved by the Seimas, the country's parliament. Social Democratic Party leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius is widely expected to receive the nomination. If confirmed, he will have up to 15 days to present a cabinet and government program for parliamentary endorsement. This will be the third prime minister for Lithuania in two years, following the resignation of former Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas last year over investigations into his business dealings.
The new ruling majority, formed last week, consists of the Social Democrats and two other center-left parties, controlling 75 seats in the 141-member parliament. The coalition agreement signals a potential shift in foreign policy, with a stated willingness to pursue more stable relations with Beijing by restoring diplomatic dialogue and expanding economic cooperation, while maintaining Lithuania's commitments to the European Union, NATO, and its strategic partnership with Taiwan. At least four ministerial posts are expected to change hands, though major national strategies are anticipated to remain consistent.
In her final cabinet meeting, Ruginienė, a former labor union leader, expressed pride in the government's achievements despite numerous challenges, stating, "Despite all the difficulties, we have much to be proud of, and each of you has made a significant contribution to the welfare of our state and the improving lives of its people."
Why This Matters
This resignation signals a shift in Lithuania’s foreign policy, particularly toward China, as the new coalition seeks to restore diplomatic dialogue and expand economic ties with Beijing while maintaining support for Taiwan. For businesses and investors, this could mean reduced geopolitical tensions and new opportunities for trade and cooperation in the Baltic region.
