Irish Runner Ciara Mageean, European 1500m Champion, Dies at 34

Ciara Mageean, a two-time Olympian and European 1500m gold medallist, has died at 34 following a battle with cancer. Her family announced her death on Sunday, 1 November 2026, stating she passed away at 6:30 am surrounded by loved ones. Mageean was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in May 2025 and had publicly shared her diagnosis, expressing her determination to pursue available treatment.

Mageean, from Portaferry in County Down, Northern Ireland, achieved the pinnacle of her career at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome, where she won the 1500m gold medal in 4:04.66—a breakthrough victory after several near-misses at major championships. She became Ireland's second individual European athletics champion, following Sonia O'Sullivan. Mageean represented Ireland at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics, though she was forced to withdraw from the 2024 Paris Games due to an Achilles injury. She held multiple Irish records across 800m, 1500m, and mile distances, and had won European medals spanning bronze (2016, 2019 indoor), silver (2022), and gold (2024).

Beyond her medal achievements, Mageean was noted for her courage and transparency about her illness.
