Jamie Lynn Spears has revealed the harrowing details of her daughter Maddie’s near-fatal ATV accident in 2017, sharing that a priest was called to administer last rites after the then-8-year-old fell into a coma. In an interview with People published Wednesday, June 17, the actress opened up about the traumatic event that took place in February 2017 at the family home of Maddie’s stepfather, Jamie Watson, in Fluker, Louisiana. Authorities confirmed that Maddie crashed a Polaris ATV into a pond while avoiding a drainage ditch, leaving her submerged and unconscious for two days.
Spears, best known for her roles in “Zoey 101” and “Sweet Magnolias,” said she believed she might lose her daughter. The family rushed to the water and attempted to free Maddie, who was trapped under the vehicle. A priest was summoned to perform last rites, a Catholic ritual typically reserved for those gravely ill or near death. However, following fervent prayer, a firefighter shouted that Maddie had a pulse, and she suddenly sat up in her hospital restraints.
“He comes in, and she physically sits up in all her restraints and tubes. I’m screaming for the doctors, like ‘Come in here now!’ Even the priest was like, ‘I’ve never seen anything like what’s happening,’” Spears recounted. “I knew she was in there and felt all of us praying. We were given a miracle, and I don’t take it for granted.” She added, “Against all odds, this baby girl fought to be here.”
Spears noted that Maddie, now 18, does not remember the accident but that the experience strengthened the family’s faith. The singer also revealed that the ordeal influenced her decision to have another child, as she had bargained with God during Maddie’s coma: “Take my arm, take my leg. I don’t care. Just give me my baby back. I was like, ‘I’ll have a baby. I’ll have whatever you want.’” After Maddie woke, she asked her mother, “You going to give me that baby?” Spears welcomed her daughter Ivey Joan Watson in 2018.
Reflecting on the incident, Spears said, “In the end, I think such a negative experience affected us positively.” The family has since become more resilient and grateful for the miraculous outcome.
