Former Rockstar Dev: GTA 6 Could Delay to 2027 if Polish Needed
Former Rockstar animator Mike York says GTA 6 could still be delayed into 2027 if final mission polish requires additional time, despite the game's November 19, 2026 release date being pre-ordered and officially confirmed.
Quick Facts
- Former developer comments on possible GTA 6 delay
- GTA 6 pre-orders opened in June 2026
- Game has already experienced two prior delays
- Possible six-month postponement discussed
- Mike York (former Rockstar Games animator)

Mike York, a former Rockstar Games animator who worked on Grand Theft Auto 5 from 2012 to 2019, has stated that a delay for GTA 6 beyond its November 19, 2026 release date remains possible, despite pre-orders opening in June. In comments to Indy100, York said he "would not be shocked at all" if Rockstar postpones the game again, citing his experience at the studio. He explained that if the final mission or other elements require additional polish or bug fixing as November approaches, Rockstar could delay the release by six months or more, potentially pushing it into 2027.
York emphasized that he no longer works at Rockstar and has no inside information about the game's current state. However, he argued that the studio's high standards and the size of GTA 6's audience make another delay feasible from a business standpoint. "They can do whatever they want and people will wait right now, it doesn't matter," York said. "If they need to do what they need to do, they'll do it. So if November comes around and they're thinking 'this final mission we have is still not looking very good and there are still a few bugs in this final mission', they'll push it six more months if they have to."
This assessment comes as GTA 6 has already experienced two delays since its original 2025 window. Rockstar moved the release first to May 26, 2026, then to November 19, 2026. In previous comments, York estimated the game to be between 80% and 90% complete. Official confirmation from Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, and industry insiders has consistently stated that the November 19 date remains planned. Prediction markets and investor confidence have not significantly wavered despite the marketing pause.
York's comments reflect broader industry practice around high-profile releases. Rockstar has a documented history of prioritizing quality over deadlines, and past employees have cited mandatory overtime in pursuit of the studio's objectives. Take-Two CEO Zelnick has denied that excessive crunch time remains standard practice, which York suggested could contribute to longer development cycles.
Why This Matters
GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026, with pre-orders opened and institutional confidence stable. A former developer's assessment of potential further delay introduces uncertainty for retailers, platform holders, and consumers who have pre-purchased or committed marketing spend. The game has already shifted from 2025 to May 2026, then to November 2026. If delayed to 2027, it would affect Q4 2026 hardware sales cycles, holiday retail expectations, and revenue guidance for Take-Two Interactive and related ecosystem partners.
