Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany hospitalized after collapsing at training

Vincent Kompany, the 40-year-old manager of Bayern Munich, was taken to hospital on Friday, October 23, after collapsing while observing the club's reserve team training session. Emergency services responded to the incident at Bayern's training ground, with a medical helicopter dispatched to the scene, though Kompany was transported to the hospital by medical vehicle rather than air. Bayern Munich confirmed that he is in stable condition and will undergo thorough medical examination while remaining under medical care.

Kompany had been suffering from a viral infection for approximately one week prior to the collapse. The illness first became apparent during Bayern's 6–1 victory over RB Leipzig on Saturday, October 19, when he remained on the bench but was observed resting on a sofa in the coach's office during halftime and after the match. He subsequently missed training sessions on Monday and Tuesday and was absent from the pre-match press conference before Bayern's Champions League fixture against Arsenal on Wednesday, October 22, though he did appear on the touchline during the 2–2 draw.

According to German media reports, the viral infection has caused complications affecting old scar tissue in Kompany's body, limiting his mobility. In a post-match interview following the Arsenal game, Kompany acknowledged the physical toll, stating: "As a coach, you always want to do everything and achieve everything. Last week I caught a rather nasty virus, but of course I didn't listen to my body. And at some point, my body said 'stop!'" Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl issued a statement emphasizing that "Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority" and that the club will provide "all the necessary medical care and support."

During Kompany's hospitalization, his coaching staff will manage all training and match operations. Bayern Munich's next fixture is against SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, October 25, with the club working to determine Kompany's availability for the match. The 40-year-old Belgian, who previously managed Burnley before joining Bayern in May 2024, has led the club to Bundesliga titles in the past two seasons.
