USA defeats Chile 4-2 in friendly; bench clears late over goalkeeper incident

The United States defeated Chile 4-2 in an international friendly on Tuesday at Energizer Park in St. Louis, extending its all-time record against Chile to 4-5-3 and improving to 5-0-0 at the venue. Chile opened the scoring through Sebastian Berhalter in the 37th minute following a cross from Sergiño Dest. The visitors equalized through Diego Ulloa in first-half stoppage time on a rebound from inside the box, then took the lead when Maximiliano Gutiérrez dribbled down the left wing and beat goalkeeper Brian Schwake early in the second half. However, Julian Hall headed in a cross from Gio Reyna in the 51st minute to level at 2-2, and Chris Richards restored the American advantage with a header off a Berhalter corner kick in the 72nd minute. Mathis Albert, at 17 years and 131 days old, became the youngest player in USMNT history to score when he added the fourth goal in the 93rd minute.

The match concluded with both benches clearing in the 94th minute after a confrontation between goalkeeper Brian Schwake and Chile's Leandro Hernández over a light contact with the ball while Schwake held it in his box. Both Hernández and Richards received yellow cards; no further discipline was issued on the pitch. U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino used the friendly to develop young talent, with six players making their first senior team starts, including Hall, who scored in his second consecutive match after debuting against Peru on Saturday. Chile suffered its second consecutive loss on the North American tour, having fallen to Canada 1-0 on Saturday in Toronto.

Before the match, veteran U.S. defender Tim Ream, a St. Louis native who made 86 appearances for the national team since 2010 and served as captain during the 2026 World Cup, confirmed his retirement from international play.
