The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago is set to host a star-studded grand opening ceremony on Thursday, featuring performances by Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Bono, and many other notable artists. The invite-only event on the center's John Lewis Plaza will also include speeches by former presidents and dignitaries, with former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama expected to attend alongside former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
The festivities are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. CT, with live coverage starting on NBC Chicago's streaming channel at 8 a.m. and continuing on television from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Organizers have described the lineup as featuring "legendary performances by global icons and powerful remarks from today's most prominent voices." The ceremony will also be streamed on the Telemundo Chicago app and website from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The $850 million campus, located at 6001 S. Stony Island Ave. on Chicago's South Side, includes campaign memorabilia, presidential artifacts, a Chicago Public Library branch, a full-size basketball court, and more. The presidential center will open to the public on Friday, which coincides with the Juneteenth holiday. Tickets for opening day and subsequent months are already sold out.
In preparation for the event, multiple road closures have been in effect since Monday morning and will last for five days. The closures include sections of Midway Plaisance, Blackstone Avenue, Cornell Drive, Stony Island Avenue, and 59th Street. Comcast, NBC Universal's parent organization, is among the museum's donors.
