US Launches Seventh Night of Strikes on Iran as Ceasefire Collapses
The US conducted its seventh consecutive night of airstrikes on Iran on July 17, targeting bridges, ports, and infrastructure in southern provinces as the interim ceasefire collapsed. Iran responded with coordinated missile and drone attacks on US-allied nations including Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain. At least 38 people have been killed in Iran and shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains largely halted.
Quick Facts
- US launched seventh consecutive night of airstrikes on Iran
- Strikes targeted bridges near Bandar Abbas
- Iranshahr Airport struck
- Railway junction station damaged
- Chabahar port surveillance tower destroyed
The United States conducted its seventh consecutive night of airstrikes against Iran on July 17, expanding its campaign to include bridges, ports, power infrastructure, and civilian facilities in southern provinces including Hormozgan, Khuzestan, and Sistan and Baluchestan. US Central Command announced the strikes at 3 p.m. ET, stating they were designed to "continue degrading Iranian military capabilities" at President Trump's direction. The campaign targeted bridges near Bandar Abbas, Iran's main port on the Strait of Hormuz, a railway junction station, Iranshahr Airport, and a surveillance tower at Chabahar port on the Gulf of Oman.
Iranian state media reported at least eight people killed and 20 injured in the latest strikes, while Iran's Health Ministry said the overall toll since fighting resumed had reached at least 38 dead and over 400 wounded. The strikes appeared to focus on infrastructure used to control shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The US military described targets as military logistics infrastructure and maritime capabilities, while Iranian officials characterized the strikes as hitting civilian infrastructure. The US also destroyed a surveillance tower at Chabahar port operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which US Central Command said would degrade Iran's ability to track and target commercial shipping.
In response, Iran launched coordinated missile and drone attacks on US-allied nations across the region. Qatar activated air defenses twice as Iranian missiles were intercepted, with falling debris wounding a child. Kuwait reported Iranian strikes on a power and desalination plant, which supplies approximately 90 percent of the country's drinking water. Iran also claimed attacks on Bahrain, Oman, and the al-Tanf military base in Syria, though US and Syrian officials denied the latter. Strikes in Iraqi Kurdistan killed eight members of armed Kurdish opposition groups. Jordan's military reported shooting down three Iranian missiles with no casualties.
The escalation marks the collapse of an interim ceasefire and memorandum of understanding signed in mid-June between the US and Iran. Both sides have competing interpretations of terms regarding transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway handling approximately one-fifth of global oil and gas trade in peacetime. Iran effectively closed the strait following the outbreak of war on February 28, and the US reimposed a naval blockade of Iranian ports on Wednesday. Shipping traffic has been drastically reduced, with week-to-week cargo drops of nearly 25 percent reported at the beginning of the month.
President Trump stated in a primetime address that the US was "winning big in Iran" and the public would see "the fruits of that labor very, very shortly." White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Thursday that talks between the US and Iran were ongoing, stating "the President is not going to allow them to fire on ships in the strait without paying a consequence." She added that Iranian officials had expressed they still wanted to make a deal with Trump. Despite diplomatic messaging, the scale and intensity of strikes and counterstrikes show no immediate signs of de-escalation.
US military casualties have reached 14 deaths and 427 injuries, with 13 additional personnel wounded since Monday, including 10 Army soldiers and 3 Navy sailors. US Central Command stated that most injured service members suffered traumatic brain injuries. The International Energy Agency has expressed concern over global energy supplies, with its director stating Thursday that the situation would be worrying if it did not improve in coming weeks.
Why This Matters
Escalation in US-Iran military operations has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway carrying roughly one-fifth of global oil and gas trade. Infrastructure damage to Iranian ports and regional power/desalination facilities directly affects energy supplies and freshwater availability to millions. Reported US military casualties (14 deaths, 427+ injuries) and regional counterstrikes suggest sustained military engagement with no near-term ceasefire signal, creating measurable risks for global energy prices, regional stability, and ongoing US force deployments.
