Russia Expands Domestic Aircraft Component Manufacturing, Says Federal Air Transport Agency
Russia has expanded its production of aircraft components since 2022, evolving from interior fittings to complex systems like electrical power and air conditioning units. Recent legislative amendments to the Air Code have facilitated this domestic manufacturing capability, helping reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.

Russian enterprises have significantly expanded their production of components for foreign aircraft, according to Dmitry Yadrov, head of the Federal Air Transport Agency. The initiative began in 2022 and has evolved from manufacturing interior components such as kitchens, seats, and baggage storage devices to producing more complex parts including electrical power systems, air conditioning units, and brake discs.
Yadrov attributed this expansion to recent legislative changes, particularly amendments to the Air Code known as the PMA Components Law, adopted last year. These regulatory reforms have enabled Russian industrial enterprises and aviation companies to develop a domestic supply chain for aircraft components. According to Yadrov, similar practices exist in other countries with established counterpart component industries, and the new legislation helps reduce Russia's dependence on foreign suppliers.
Yadrov highlighted Russia's broader aviation capabilities, noting that the country remains unique in building aircraft independently without involvement from other nations. He cited examples of current domestic production efforts, including a water-vacuum system for the Superjet aircraft and avionics systems. He also pointed to the PD-8 engine, developed by Rybinsk plant under the United Engine Corporation, which was created domestically from scratch within six years.
Topics
Why This Matters
Russia's expansion of domestic aircraft component manufacturing signals a strategic shift toward supply chain independence amid international sanctions and geopolitical tensions. This development has practical implications for global aviation supply chains, potentially fragmenting standardized component sourcing and affecting aircraft maintenance costs worldwide. For businesses and governments, it underscores the growing importance of securing alternative suppliers and understanding regional manufacturing capabilities in a more fragmented global market.
