Two high-speed trains collided near Toledo, Spain, on October 28, 2026, killing at least 50 people and injuring 179 others, according to local media reports. The crash occurred between the villages of Urda and Los Yébenes in Toledo province, on the railway line connecting Madrid to Seville. A RENFE train carrying 397 passengers struck the rear of an IRYO service with 147 people on board that had stopped on the same track. Two carriages were knocked off the rails, with one torn apart, and twisted metal and debris scattered down a gravel embankment.
The death toll has risen significantly since the initial government confirmation of 10 fatalities. The Castilla-La Mancha regional government initially reported the lower figure but warned the toll was likely to increase. Aerial footage shows the damaged trains surrounded by firefighters, police, and rescue teams in a flat, rural landscape. Emergency workers concentrated on reaching victims trapped in the two worst-damaged carriages, while injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals. A military emergency unit was deployed to assist in rescue operations.
Five Italian nationals were on the IRYO train involved in the collision. According to the Italian foreign ministry, four of the Italians were in good condition, while checks were ongoing regarding the fifth. The Italian consul in Madrid traveled to the scene, and the foreign ministry established a crisis unit to coordinate assistance.
Rail services between Madrid, Ciudad Real, and Andalusia were suspended following the accident. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez cancelled his engagements to focus on the disaster response. The cause of the collision remains unknown. This marks Spain's second major rail tragedy in 2026; in January, two high-speed trains collided near Adamuz in Córdoba province, killing more than 40 people. Those successive incidents have raised concerns about safety on Spain's extensive high-speed rail network.
Why This Matters
A collision between two high-speed trains on the Madrid–Seville corridor has killed at least 50 people and injured 179, affecting passengers from multiple nations including five Italian nationals. Rail services between Madrid, Ciudad Real, and Andalusia have been suspended. The incident represents a second major collision on Spain's high-speed network in 2026, raising measurable scrutiny of network safety protocols and operational procedures; transport authorities will likely conduct formal investigations into signaling, train separation systems, and track monitoring.
