On November 3, 2026, at least six flights across European airports received bomb threats, prompting emergency landings, security evacuations, and temporary airport closures. No explosives were discovered on any aircraft.
In Poland, two flights were targeted. A LOT Polish Airlines flight from London's Heathrow to Warsaw received a bomb threat at 09:54 local time and diverted to Warsaw-Modlin Airport, landing seven minutes later with 181 people on board. Simultaneously, a Scandinavian Airlines flight from Copenhagen also received a bomb threat and landed safely at Warsaw Chopin Airport. Both underwent security inspections; neither contained explosives. Warsaw-Modlin Airport temporarily closed operations and reopened later that morning.
Additional threats were reported elsewhere. A Ryanair flight from Manchester to Murcia, Spain, received a bomb threat and landed safely; Spanish authorities confirmed no explosives. A flight from Israel landed in Sofia, Bulgaria, following a bomb threat received via email, with counter-terrorism units conducting inspections. Two further Ryanair flights from Lisbon and Dublin to Rome's Fiumicino Airport also received bomb threats; Italian Air Force jets were deployed. Both proved to be false alarms.
The incidents followed an earlier threat on Monday against a WizzAir flight from London to Sofia, which diverted to Budapest and was intercepted by Hungarian Air Force Gripen fighter jets. Hungarian Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi confirmed that NATO's air defence alert service had issued a warning and that the aircraft landed safely.
Airport authorities and law enforcement in multiple countries coordinated rapid response procedures. Airport spokesman Adam Szablowski stated that passengers were evacuated and planes underwent security checks with no threats confirmed. Operations at affected airports resumed after inspections were completed. Authorities did not immediately clarify whether the threats were linked, though the coordinated timing and geographic spread prompted heightened security vigilance across European aviation networks.
Why This Matters
Six coordinated bomb threats across European airspace on a single day triggered emergency diversions, fighter jet interceptions, airport closures, and security searches affecting hundreds of passengers and multiple national aviation authorities. No explosives were found, but the geographic spread and timing prompted NATO alert escalation and heightened security protocols across European aviation networks, affecting operations at major hubs including Warsaw, London, Madrid, Sofia, Budapest, and Rome.
