Eight teams competing in Thursday's World Cup matches are participating in a commemoration of the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, demonstrating football's commitment to combating online abuse. Team captains from the Czechia-South Africa, Mexico-South Korea, Switzerland-Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Canada-Qatar matches will exchange pennants bearing the message "We Play Together. We Stand Against Hate," with the phrase displayed in English on one side and in the native language of each competing nation on the other. Additional stadium activations featuring the same message are planned throughout Thursday's matches.

FIFA has intensified its efforts to address hate speech on social media platforms. Since launching its social media protection service before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, FIFA has deleted over 30 million abusive posts and comments. The organization has already removed nearly 400,000 negative or abusive posts in the first few days of the current tournament—a figure that exceeds the total number of posts removed throughout the entirety of the 2022 World Cup. This significant increase underscores the growing challenge of online hate speech during major sporting events.

The pennant exchange initiative represents a visible stand by participating teams against hate speech and discrimination. By incorporating native languages alongside English, the campaign emphasizes that the message against hate resonates across cultures and nations.
