Ruben Amorim has agreed to become the new head coach of AC Milan, a move that will relieve Manchester United of the remaining financial obligations from his dismissal earlier this year. The Portuguese manager, who was sacked by United in January, will replace Massimiliano Allegri at the San Siro after signing a two-year contract with an option for a third season.
Amorim's return to management means United will no longer be liable for the full £16.7 million compensation package owed to him and his coaching staff under the severance deal. The 41-year-old is tasked with revitalising a Milan side that finished fifth in Serie A and failed to qualify for the Champions League, prompting a clear-out of senior staff including sporting director Igli Tare, chief executive Giorgio Furlani, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada.
As part of a major overhaul at the Italian club, Nottingham Forest's head of recruitment, Pedro Ferreira, is reportedly being targeted to join his compatriot Amorim in Milan. The move signals a new direction for the seven-time European champions as they seek to return to the top of Italian and European football.
In a separate development boosting United's finances, the club has announced it will feature in an Amazon All or Nothing documentary series next season. The club will receive an access fee larger than any previously paid for such documentaries, with cameras set to follow the men's team under manager Michael Carrick, as well as the women's and academy sides from the start of pre-season. Negotiations for the documentary had taken place during Amorim's tenure but were shelved at the time. "Now is the right time to open our doors, so that for the first time our fans around the world can see behind the scenes of a club which means so much to so many people," said Manchester United's chief communications officer, Toby Craig.
Why This Matters
This development directly impacts the financial and competitive landscape of two major European clubs. For Manchester United, it eases the burden of a costly settlement, freeing up resources for other investments. For AC Milan, it signals a fresh start under a promising young coach, with implications for Serie A and Champions League qualification battles. The documentary deal also provides unprecedented behind-the-scenes access for fans and generates additional revenue for United.
