Bengaluru emerged as the global centre of yoga on International Yoga Day 2026, as the Akshar Yoga Kendraa achieved 21 Guinness World Records in a single event on June 21. The event, led by renowned yoga guru Himalayan Siddha Akshar, drew more than 10,000 participants from over 100 countries, making it one of the largest yoga gatherings of its kind.
The record-breaking day began with over 7,000 practitioners performing Trataka Dhyana, a candle-gazing meditation technique known for enhancing concentration and mindfulness. Trained participants then demonstrated extraordinary strength, balance, and endurance by holding advanced yoga postures for periods ranging from 30 to 120 seconds, helping secure 20 additional Guinness World Records in yogasanas.
The celebration reflected the inclusive spirit of yoga, featuring participants from diverse backgrounds including personnel from the Indian Army, Air Force, BSF, CISF, CRPF, Karnataka State Police, NCC cadets, specially-abled individuals, and children from orphanages. Speaking on the occasion, Himalayan Siddha Akshar said the achievement was not merely about breaking records but about awakening human potential and showcasing India’s timeless wisdom to the world.
Bollywood actor Rakul Preet Singh, who was personally trained by Akshar, praised the initiative in a video message shared on the organisation’s Instagram page. “Organising a community event of this scale requires dedication, discipline and teamwork. The effort by Akshar Yoga Kendra to attempt 21 Guinness World Records is truly commendable,” she said. Other celebrities, including Shilpa Shetty, also extended their well-wishes.
The event, themed ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’, aimed to promote holistic living and unite people across the globe through the practice of yoga and meditation. The Akshar Yoga Kendraa has a history of conducting mega events with over 7,000 participants, and this year’s celebration further cemented its reputation for large-scale community yoga initiatives.
Why This Matters
This event highlights the global reach and community-building power of yoga, demonstrating how large-scale, inclusive gatherings can set world records while promoting healthy aging. For wellness advocates and event organizers, it offers a replicable model for using yoga to foster unity and achieve recognition, potentially inspiring similar initiatives worldwide.
