Two Chinese Giant Pandas Depart for Zoo Atlanta in 10-Year Conservation Partnership

Two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, departed Chengdu on September 27, 2026, at 2:55 a.m. local time aboard a chartered flight bound for Zoo Atlanta in the United States. The transfer marks the resumption of China-U.S. panda cooperation after a four-year gap, during which China had reclaimed four pandas from Atlanta in 2024. Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the arrival during a state visit to the White House, calling the pandas "a symbol of friendship between the Chinese and American peoples."

Both pandas were born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding: Ping Ping (male, born March 17, 2020) and Fu Shuang (female, born October 18, 2020). Before departure, they underwent specialized transport acclimation training and health checks. Chinese veterinarians and keepers accompanied the pandas during the trans-Pacific journey, while Zoo Atlanta prepared upgraded facilities with expanded indoor exhibit areas, new enrichment features including climbing structures, stone platforms, and a pool, as well as an upgraded monitoring system. The pandas will undergo quarantine and health checks upon arrival, with Chinese staff remaining on-site throughout the adjustment period.

The 10-year conservation partnership is part of a broader agreement signed between the China Wildlife Conservation Association and Zoo Atlanta. Zoo Atlanta's previous panda program (1999–2024) successfully bred seven cubs, constituting one of the most productive international panda breeding partnerships with the Americas and Europe. The new agreement builds on more than two decades of cooperative research, with the two sides having jointly completed over 30 research projects and published more than 50 academic papers. Zoo Atlanta's climate is similar to Chengdu's, allowing year-round harvesting of fresh bamboo locally to meet the pandas' dietary needs.

Historically, China-U.S. panda diplomacy dates to 1972, when two pandas (Ling Ling and Xing Xing) arrived following President Richard Nixon's visit to China. Those pandas attracted over one million visitors in their first month. More recently, the National Zoo in Washington returned three pandas to China in 2023 before receiving replacements Bao Li and Qing Bao in October 2024. The panda loan program, spanning nearly five decades, remains one of China's longest-running and most visible international wildlife conservation initiatives.
