Ukrainian Mirage 2000-5F Shoots Down Russian Banderol Missile with Cannon
A Ukrainian Mirage 2000-5F fighter jet shot down a Russian S-8000 Banderol cruise missile using its 30-mm cannon on October 2–3, 2026—the first documented instance of an aircraft gun destroying this weapon. The engagement demonstrates the value of cannon fire in air defence when air-to-air missiles are scarce.

A Ukrainian Mirage 2000-5F fighter jet has shot down a Russian S-8000 Banderol cruise missile using its onboard 30-mm cannon, marking the first documented instance of an aircraft-mounted gun destroying this type of weapon in combat. The incident was reported by French Aid to Europe and confirmed by Ukrainian military media on October 2–3, 2026. The specific date, location, and pilot identity have not been publicly disclosed.
The Banderol, developed by Russian defence company Kronshtadt, is a small cruise missile with a maximum speed of 620–650 km/h and cruising speed of 520–560 km/h. It is powered by a Chinese-made Swiwin turbofan engine and carries a 114.3 kg fragmentation-explosive warhead containing 49.5 kg of explosive material. According to Ukrainian intelligence, Russia can produce up to 80 Banderol missiles per month. The weapon is primarily launched from Orlan attack drones and has been adapted for use on Mil Mi-28N attack helicopters since its deployment in 2024.
The Mirage 2000-5F, supplied to Ukraine by France from its Air and Space Force reserves in 2025, is equipped with two 30-mm DEFA 554 cannons built into the fuselage. Each cannon carries 125 rounds and fires at a rate of 1,800 rounds per minute, with muzzle velocity of approximately 815 m/s. The weapon uses 30×113 mm high-explosive and armour-piercing incendiary rounds. According to reports, the pilot had to approach the missile at close range to engage it effectively, as cannon fire requires proximity to a fast-moving target, unlike air-to-air missiles which can be fired from greater distances.
The engagement highlights the operational value of aircraft cannons in air defence when missile supplies are constrained. Ukrainian Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara has identified air-to-air missiles as a key requirement from NATO and EU partners. Cannon rounds are significantly cheaper than guided air-to-air missiles, which remain in short supply for Ukrainian operations. France has announced plans to provide additional MICA air-to-air missiles and 30-mm ammunition to Ukraine to support Mirage 2000 operations.
As of early 2026, Ukraine operates five Mirage 2000-5F fighters following the loss of one aircraft. France has negotiated to acquire additional aircraft from Greece, initially seeking 10 of Greece's 43 available Mirage 2000 units.
Why This Matters
Ukraine's air defence capability expands as documented anti-air tactics diversify beyond guided missiles. Cannon engagement of cruise missiles indicates operational feasibility when air-to-air missile stocks are constrained. France's commitment to supply MICA missiles and 30-mm ammunition sustains Mirage 2000-5F operations; current Ukrainian inventory stands at five aircraft following one loss. Russia's documented monthly Banderol production capacity (80 units) and platform expansion (Orlan drones, Mi-28N helicopters) shapes ongoing air defence requirements and NATO/EU supply commitments.
