IAF Ranks Third Globally, Chinese Analysts Reject WDMMA Methodology
The WDMMA 2026 rankings placed India's Air Force third globally and ahead of China's for the fifth consecutive year, using a methodology that emphasises fleet balance and special capabilities over raw numbers. Chinese defence analysts have rejected the rankings as fundamentally flawed, arguing they fail to reflect actual combat readiness or account for China's integrated military network and advanced drone capabilities.
Quick Facts
- WDMMA released 2026 Global Air Powers Rankings
- IAF ranked third globally, behind US and Russia
- PLAAF ranked fourth
- IAF ranked ahead of PLAAF for fifth consecutive year since 2022
- WDMMA uses True Value Rating (TvR) system to evaluate air forces

The World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) 2026 Global Air Powers Rankings placed the Indian Air Force third worldwide, behind the United States and Russia, with China's People's Liberation Army Air Force fourth. This marks the fifth consecutive year since 2022 that the IAF has ranked ahead of the PLAAF according to WDMMA's proprietary True Value Rating (TvR) system.
The TvR system assesses air forces using a formula that weighs fleet size, composition, modernisation, logistical support, and overall capability. The methodology emphasises fleet balance and special capabilities—including mid-air refuellers, airborne early-warning aircraft, and transport platforms—rather than fighter counts alone. The IAF achieved a TvR score of 69.4 compared to the PLAAF's 63.8, despite operating a significantly smaller fleet of approximately 1,716 aircraft against China's roughly 3,733 aircraft.
The IAF's ranking reflects its balanced fleet composition: 542 fighter jets across seven types, 498 helicopters (nearly 30% of the fleet), 282 transport aircraft, and 374 trainers. The ranking also factors in India's order books, including 180 planned Tejas Mk-1A fighters and a potential 114 additional Rafale aircraft. However, the IAF operates 29 fighter squadrons against a sanctioned strength of 42, and faces acknowledged shortfalls in special-mission platforms, mid-air refuellers, and electronic-warfare assets.
Chinese defence analysts and state-linked media outlets have strongly rejected the rankings, arguing the WDMMA methodology fails to capture real combat readiness or China's true military capabilities. Critics contend that algorithmic scoring cannot account for practical warfare performance, integrated network-driven military operations, or China's advanced drone capabilities. Prominent Chinese voices, including former PLA Navy officer Zhang Junshe, assert that computer rankings overlook China's domestic aerospace manufacturing capacity and the PLAAF's integration with broader military systems including satellite networks and long-range missile capabilities. Some Chinese strategists warn that the rankings could foster regional strategic misunderstandings.
Why This Matters
This ranking reflects a fundamental disagreement over how to measure military capability in the modern era. While WDMMA's methodology emphasizes balanced fleet composition and enabler platforms—a realistic model for expeditionary operations—Chinese critics highlight the limitations of algorithmic scoring in assessing integrated military networks, drone capabilities, and manufacturing depth. The dispute carries strategic implications: WDMMA's five-year streak of ranking India ahead of China could shape perception of regional military balance at a time of heightened India-China tensions, even as the underlying methodology remains contested.
