Valve Unveils Steam Machine Pricing, Cites Open Ecosystem as Reason Against Subsidies
Valve has announced the Steam Machine will start at $1,049 for a 512GB model, significantly higher than the original target of around $749 due to a component crisis. The company is selling the hardware at cost and rejecting subsidies to preserve the openness of the PC ecosystem. Launch quantities have been reduced, and the device is priced above competing consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Valve has officially announced the pricing for its upcoming Steam Machine, revealing that the compact gaming PC will start at $1,049 for a 512GB model, with a 2TB version costing $300 more. Configurations that include a bundled Steam Controller will add an additional $79. The price positions the Steam Machine significantly above traditional consoles, including the PS5 ($599.99), Xbox Series X ($649.99), and even the PS5 Pro ($899.99), while offering similar performance to the PS5.
Valve engineers confirmed that the final price reflects current market conditions, particularly the ongoing AI-fueled RAM crisis and broader component shortages. According to Valve's Pierre-Loup Griffais and Yazan Aldehayyat, the Steam Machine experienced a price increase comparable to the Steam Deck's recent 35-36% rise. Initial estimates placed the Steam Machine's original target price around $749, but the component crunch forced adjustments, resulting in a final entry price roughly 33% higher.
Valve has also made clear that it will not subsidize the Steam Machine hardware, a common practice among console makers. In statements provided to The Verge, Valve explained that subsidizing hardware "doesn’t align with our beliefs about how healthy ecosystems are built." The company emphasized its commitment to open systems, arguing that selling hardware at a loss is often used to build closed ecosystems and limit consumer choice. Valve asserted that the openness of the PC platform has driven innovation and that customers should have the freedom to choose their preferred hardware.
Valve's Lawrence Yang stated that the Steam Machine is being sold at cost, with margins kept as tight as possible. Pierre-Loup Griffais added that the component crisis has also reduced the planned launch quantity to about two-thirds of what was originally intended. The Steam Machine was initially expected to launch in early 2026, but that timeline was delayed due to memory and storage shortages.

Why This Matters
This pricing decision signals that Valve is prioritizing ecosystem openness over competitive pricing. For PC gamers, this means the Steam Machine will not undercut existing consoles; instead, it offers a portable, customizable PC experience at a premium. The price jump also reflects broader hardware market volatility, affecting consumer expectations for future PC gaming devices.
