Gold near $4,000 as Middle East conflict, Fed rate hike fears pressure prices
Gold prices hovered near $4,000 per ounce on Monday as escalating U.S.-Iran conflict pushed oil above $90 a barrel, fueling inflation fears and strengthening expectations that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates. Analysts remain divided on the near-term outlook, with some expecting continued range-bound trading until the Fed's policy stance becomes clearer.
Quick Facts
- gold prices declined
- Brent crude oil rose above $90 per barrel
- U.S.-Iran conflict escalated
- Fed officials signaled potential rate hikes
- gold tested $4,000 support level

Gold prices hovered near the key $4,000 per ounce level on Monday, as escalating conflict in the Middle East pushed Brent crude oil above $90 a barrel, stoking inflation fears and reinforcing expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve may raise interest rates.
Spot gold was down 0.4% at $4,000.55 per ounce in early Asian trade, after hitting a two-week low on Friday and posting a 2.5% weekly loss. U.S. gold futures for August delivery eased 0.3% to $4,005.9. Over the previous week, gold briefly touched a weekly high of $4,122.63 before falling to a low of $3,959.37, closing the week at $4,015.83.
The renewed hostilities between the U.S. and Iran have effectively broken a ceasefire, with both sides continuing to exchange fire. The U.S. said it had completed a ninth consecutive night of attacks against Iran, after earlier announcing that at least two U.S. military personnel were killed in Jordan. The uncertainty over navigation through the Strait of Hormuz has driven oil prices higher, with Brent crude surging past $90 a barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude also above $80.
Higher energy prices have intensified market concerns that the Fed may tighten monetary policy further to combat persistent inflation. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack expressed concern about rising inflation, joining a growing number of policymakers arguing that interest rates may need to rise. Some traders now expect at least one rate hike by the end of the year. Higher interest rates increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets such as gold.
Analysts offered mixed views on gold's near-term outlook. Thu Lan Nguyen of Commerzbank said further upside potential is likely to remain limited as long as expectations of interest rate hikes persist. Adrian Day of Adrian Day Asset Management said he expects volatile trading within a range, adding that a clear breakout to the upside is unlikely until the Fed signals no more rate hikes. Paul Wong of Sprott Inc. noted that gold appears oversold by several technical measures and may rebound by late summer.
Meanwhile, U.S. consumer sentiment rose to a five-month high in July, but analysts said the improvement may be temporary as renewed conflict in the Middle East pushes gasoline prices higher. Gold discounts in India widened to a one-month low as weak jewellery demand kept buyers on the sidelines, while premiums in China were largely steady on muted retail demand.
Why This Matters
Gold and crude oil price movements directly affect global inflation expectations, central bank policy timing, and portfolio reallocation across asset classes. A sustained surge in oil prices above $90/barrel typically feeds inflation data within 4–6 weeks; Fed rate-hike signals reshape bond yields and currency valuations, impacting savings returns, corporate borrowing costs, and foreign exchange reserves held by central banks. Geopolitical escalation in the Middle East creates shipping-cost volatility through the Strait of Hormuz, affecting supply-chain logistics and energy-dependent industries worldwide.
