Eva Marie Saint, the acclaimed actress whose Academy Award-winning debut in Elia Kazan's 1954 crime drama "On the Waterfront" launched one of Hollywood's most selective careers, died Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 102.
Saint won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her first film role, playing Edie Doyle opposite Marlon Brando. Notably, she accepted the Oscar from Frank Sinatra while pregnant with her first child, delivering a memorably brief acceptance speech: "I think I may have the baby right here." Her son was born two days later. Five years after "On the Waterfront," she played the femme fatale Eve Kendall opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 spy thriller "North by Northwest."
Throughout her career, Saint exercised unusual independence in choosing roles, declining lucrative studio contracts and turning down starring opportunities in major films to prioritize raising her family with director-husband Jeffrey Hayden. She appeared in only seven films during her first decade in Hollywood, declining offers from top-tier productions. Her curated approach to acting—guided partly by Hayden's encouragement—included notable roles in "Exodus," "All Fall Down," and later a return to prominence in television during the 1970s and beyond. She won an Emmy Award in 1990 for the miniseries "People Like Us" and appeared in 21st-century films including "Superman Returns," "Winter's Tale," and "Mariette in Ecstasy."
Born Eva Marie Saint on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, she initially aspired to teach third grade like her mother before discovering acting at Bowling Green State University. She trained at the Actors Studio and the Herbert Berghof Studio in New York, performing in live television in the late 1940s and on Broadway before Kazan cast her opposite Brando. Saint remained the oldest surviving Oscar winner at the time of her death. She was married to Hayden for 65 years until his death in 2016, and is survived by two children: son Darrell and daughter Laurette.
