Comcast Plans $1B+ Restructuring, Massive Layoffs as It Loses Broadband Customers
Comcast is planning significant job cuts and a $1 billion-plus restructuring charge in Q4 2026 as it prepares for the mid-2027 spin-off of NBCUniversal and Sky. The company is losing residential broadband customers to cheaper fiber and wireless competitors, and is expanding AI in customer service to reduce headcount and operating costs.
Quick Facts
- Announced over $1 billion restructuring charge for Q4 2026
- Planning significant job cuts in Comcast Cable division
- Expanding AI agents in customer service
- Losing residential broadband customers to competition
- Spinning off NBCUniversal and Sky as independent company

Comcast announced major restructuring plans on its Q3 2026 earnings call, citing over $1 billion in charges expected in Q4 as the company prepares for significant job cuts. The cuts are primarily focused on the Comcast Cable side of the business—spanning cable TV, broadband, and wireless segments—ahead of the planned spin-off of NBCUniversal and Sky in mid-2027. CFO Jason Armstrong framed the restructuring not as cost-cutting but as a way to "simplify in order to move faster, to be more nimble in decision-making, and create capacity to invest for growth."
The layoffs come as Comcast faces intensifying customer losses in its core broadband business. The company lost 144,000 residential broadband customers in Q3 2026, a sharp increase from 91,000 losses in Q3 2025, as fixed wireless providers and fiber operators capture market share with aggressive pricing. Co-CEO Mike Cavanagh characterized some fiber operators' $30–$40 monthly broadband offers as "irrational pricing," noting that deploying fiber costs $1,500 or more per household. Comcast ended Q3 with 28.3 million residential broadband customers in the US, a decline from prior periods.
As part of its transformation strategy, Comcast is expanding the deployment of AI agents in customer service to reduce costs and improve efficiency. CFO Armstrong stated that AI rollout has already reduced service contact rates by roughly 20%. The company simultaneously added 368,000 net domestic wireless lines in Q3, ending the quarter with 10.6 million wireless subscribers, suggesting that wireless and business services are growth priorities as the connectivity and broadband segment contracts.
Comcast's total Q3 revenue was $29.3 billion, down 6.1% year-over-year on a reported basis (reflecting the earlier Versant separation and Sky's German operations sale), though up 0.5% on a pro forma basis. Operating income fell to $5.32 billion from $5.53 billion, while free cash flow declined 14.8% to $4.21 billion. Mike Cavanagh, currently co-CEO, is set to become CEO of the standalone NBCUniversal following the spin-off, while Michael Angelakis, Comcast's former CFO, will become CEO of the remaining Comcast. As of December 31, 2025, Comcast employed approximately 179,000 people, though the exact number of positions affected by the upcoming layoffs has not been disclosed.

Why This Matters
Comcast, one of the largest US telecommunications and media companies, is restructuring its core cable division as customer losses accelerate in residential broadband—a historically stable revenue source. The company lost 144,000 broadband customers in Q3 2026 vs. 91,000 a year earlier, driven by fiber and fixed wireless operators undercutting prices. The planned spin-off of NBCUniversal and Sky will separate media and entertainment assets from connectivity operations, affecting approximately 179,000 employees as of end-2025. Management is betting on wireless growth (368,000 net additions in Q3), AI-driven cost reduction (20% contact reduction already achieved), and business services to offset broadband decline. Q3 free cash flow declined 14.8% year-over-year; the measure of restructuring success will be whether cost cuts and new business segments restore profitability and cash generation by late 2027.
