Luis Javier Suárez Named Colombia's Starting Striker for World Cup Debut

Luis Javier Suárez, the Colombian international striker, has been confirmed as the starting forward for Colombia's World Cup debut against Uzbekistan. The Sporting Lisbon forward earned his place after an outstanding season in which he scored over 30 goals, surpassing competitors such as Rafael Santos Borré, who was not called up, and Jhon Córdoba, who netted four goals against Venezuela in South American qualifiers.

The announcement came alongside praise from Paraguayan football legend Roque Santa Cruz, who during a CONMEBOL activity categorized Suárez as a "crack" — the highest tier — placing him among elite South American forwards including Enner Valencia (Ecuador), Julián Álvarez (Argentina), and Lautaro Martínez (Argentina). Santa Cruz ranked Suárez above other notable strikers such as Matheus Cunha (Brazil), Darwin Núñez (Uruguay), and Antonio Sanabria (Paraguay).

Ahead of the match, Suárez emphasized the collective responsibility of the team. "Beyond thinking individually, we have to think as a group. The 26 of us plus the coaching staff have a big responsibility to unite an entire country. We can be extremely important for everyone's happiness," he said. He also praised teammates James Rodríguez and Luis Díaz, noting that their quality can change a game at any moment.

Speaking about Uzbekistan, Suárez acknowledged their defensive discipline. "We need to be very patient and have the ability to find spaces. Uzbekistan plays with five at the back, and we are ready to face that kind of opponent. We want the coach's plan to work perfectly," he added.
