North Korea's Kim Jong Un Oversees Tests of Advanced Artillery and Missile Systems

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed comprehensive tests of modernized military weapon systems on June 25, according to state media reports released on June 26. The tests evaluated three main weapons platforms: an upgraded 240-millimeter 24-tubular multiple rocket launcher system with a firing range extended to 90 kilometers, a tactical ballistic missile equipped with a special mission warhead, and 155-millimeter self-propelled gun-howitzer shells with an extended range of 65 kilometers. All elements of the rocket launcher's firepower system were automated and equipped with self-steered precision guidance technology.

The special mission warhead of the tactical ballistic missile was specifically designed to inflict fatal damage on major enemy infrastructure targets, including airfields, ports, and power facilities. South Korean military officials confirmed they detected more than 10 rocket launches and other projectiles fired from eastern North Korea on the test date, corroborating North Korean accounts of the weapons trials.

Kim Jong Un expressed great satisfaction with the test results, characterizing them as demonstrating significant technological progress in modernizing the country's military capabilities. He emphasized three key development principles: automation, long-range capability, and ultra-precision accuracy. Kim stated that these advances were essential to changing the firepower posture on the southern border and fulfilling the country's five-year defense development targets.

In remarks accompanying the tests, Kim articulated North Korea's defense philosophy, stating that the country's self-defense policy extends beyond enhancing defensive capabilities to strengthening what he described as a "deadly and destructive offensive posture" designed to deter potential adversaries. This characterization reflects North Korea's broader military modernization strategy amid ongoing tensions with South Korea, which it has labeled a "very hostile state and eternal enemy."
