Quick Facts

- Vivienne removed Pitt from surname

- Vivienne had been using Jolie professionally since 2024

Vivienne Jolie, 18, officially changed her legal name to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie on November 2, 2026, after a Los Angeles Superior Court judge approved her petition without objection. Judge Virginia Keeny presided over the hearing at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse, where Vivienne's attorney, Peter Kenneth Levine, appeared remotely on her behalf. Court documents cited "personal" reasons for the name change.
Vivienne had already adopted the Jolie surname professionally for over two years. In May 2024, she was credited as "Vivienne Jolie" in the Playbill for the Broadway musical "The Outsiders," in which she worked as a producer's assistant alongside her mother, Angelina Jolie. She filed her petition on July 20, 2026, eight days after turning 18.
Vivienne becomes the fourth of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's six children to legally remove Pitt from their surname. Her siblings Shiloh, Maddox, and Zahara have also made the same change. Shiloh filed in May 2024 and had her request granted in August 2024. Maddox's name change to Maddox Chivan Jolie became official on September 14, 2026, and Zahara's petition to become Zahara Marley Jolie was approved on September 28, 2026. Her twin brother Knox also omitted Pitt from his high school diploma in June 2026, though he has not legally changed his name in court. Pax, 22, is the only child still using the Pitt surname.
In a September 2026 interview with L'Officiel, Angelina Jolie said her children "are definitely individuals" and emphasized that "one of the most important things" as a parent is "to basically not get in their way." Brad Pitt has not publicly commented on his children's surname changes. The name changes occur amid the family's estrangement following the actors' separation in 2016. Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016 after two years of marriage, and their divorce was finalized in December 2024 after an eight-year legal battle. The former couple remains involved in a separate legal dispute over their French winery, Château Miraval.

Why This Matters
Vivienne's legal name change represents a formal court action that establishes a measurable change in official documentation and public identity. Four of the former couple's six children have now completed legal surname changes since 2024, reflecting a documented family pattern in the years following their 2016 separation and 2024 divorce finalization. The case involves established legal procedures in California family courts and affects official records, professional credentials, and legal status for an adult individual.
