The Telangana government has issued a notification to fill 24 Deputy Education Officer (DEO) posts, ending a 19-year gap since the last recruitment drive in 2007. The Telangana State Public Service Commission (TGPSC) released the notification on Wednesday, marking a significant step toward addressing chronic staff shortages in the state's school education department. Candidates must possess a degree and a postgraduate qualification; a B.Ed degree is not mandatory at the time of application but can be completed after joining service. Examinations are scheduled for October 2026, with successful candidates expected to join by the end of the year.
Currently, 72 DEO posts exist across the state, of which 33 percent (24 posts) are to be filled through direct recruitment, while the remaining 67 percent will be filled through promotions. However, promotion processes have been stalled for two decades due to a pending court case on unified service rules for teachers. As a result, in-charge DEOs are managing most districts, with only four out of 33 districts having regular officers. In some areas, collectors, additional collectors, and officials from other departments have been assigned to handle DEO duties.
In addition to DEO recruitment, the state plans to fill 116 teaching vacancies across several institutions under the school education department. These include 23 senior lecturer and 63 lecturer posts at 12 government District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs), 22 posts at the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), the Centre for Educational Technology (CET), and the Institute of Advanced Study in Education (IASE), and 8 posts at the Government College of Physical Education in Domalguda. The TGPSC will soon issue separate notifications for these positions.
More than 80 percent of teaching posts in these institutions are currently vacant. The direct recruitment of 140 posts through TGPSC is expected to provide stability for at least three years, as many candidates will later be promoted to regular DEO roles. The government has also sanctioned an additional 21 DEO posts, bringing the total to 72. This recruitment drive aims to resolve long-standing shortages that have hampered the administration and quality of education in government schools and colleges across Telangana.
Why This Matters
This recruitment drive after a 19-year gap directly addresses chronic staff shortages in Telangana's education administration. For educators and job seekers, it opens up new permanent positions and a clear promotion path. For students and the public, it signals improved management and quality in government schools and colleges, as regular officers will replace in-charge staff across most districts.
