Fire destroys UFPE research building; R$100 million loss, third incident in eight days
A fire destroyed the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Directorate building at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) on October 7, 2026, causing R$100 million in estimated losses and destroying over 200 research projects and approximately 80 doctoral theses and dissertations. The incident marked the third fire at UFPE within eight days; the Federal Police opened an investigation and the Education Ministry announced R$28 million for reconstruction.

A major fire destroyed the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Directorate (DINE) building at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) on October 7, 2026, causing an estimated loss of R$100 million according to university leadership. The five-story structure housed laboratories for pharmacy, informatics, and genetics, along with a therapeutic innovation research center investigating autism, cancer, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). No injuries were reported.
The fire marked the third incident at UFPE within eight days. On September 30, flames damaged a physics laboratory, suspected to have originated from a high-temperature chamber used for heating substances. On October 4, another fire struck the Plant Cytogenetics and Evolution laboratory at the Biosciences Center, attributed to an air-conditioning unit short circuit. Both earlier fires caused no casualties and were smaller in scale.
Research programs suffered irreplaceable losses. Approximately 80 to 100 graduate and doctoral students lost months or years of work, according to rector Alfredo Macedo Gomes. Over 200 research projects were affected, with approximately 80 doctoral theses and master's dissertations lost. A Fiocruz researcher maintained genetic samples from approximately 200 liver cancer patients collected over a decade; these were destroyed. Data and samples accumulated over twenty years were lost. University officials stated that flammable materials were properly stored and did not cause the ignition; the rapid fire spread was attributed partly to the types of products stored in the building.
The Federal Police opened an investigation into the fire's cause, deploying drones and robots to examine the site. The National Institute of Criminology will conduct detailed analysis. Education Minister Leonardo Barchini announced R$28 million in federal funding for constructing a replacement building and replacing destroyed equipment. Barchini indicated that researchers could temporarily continue work at partner institutions in Brazil and internationally, including laboratories in Germany, the United States, and France. Reconstruction could begin within 30 days after investigation and inspection concluded. The new facility, approximately 7,000 square meters, would exceed the damaged building's 3,000 square meters and follow the design of an existing UFPE research center in Sertânia municipality.
The Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) expressed solidarity with UFPE, offering institutional support for recovery efforts. UFMG's rector and vice-rector emphasized that losses transcend material damage, affecting researchers' careers, multi-generational work, and future projects. They called for societal reflection on universities' importance to knowledge production, citizenship promotion, and democratic consolidation.

Why This Matters
The destruction of the DINE building affects approximately 80–100 graduate and doctoral students who lost months to years of research work, and eliminates 200+ active research projects including medical research on autism, cancer, and ADHD. The loss of genetic samples from a decade-long liver cancer study and data accumulated over two decades represents irreplaceable scientific assets. Three fires in eight days at the same institution signal a pattern requiring investigation; reconstruction is estimated at 30+ days pending federal police findings and safety inspection. The R$28 million federal reconstruction fund and temporary relocation of researchers to international partner institutions (Germany, US, France) indicate material and operational recovery processes, while underlying fire-safety causes remain under investigation.
