Jackie, beloved livestreamed bald eagle, dies after three-week illness
Jackie, the iconic bald eagle whose livestreamed nest with partner Shadow captured global attention for over a decade, died Monday after a three-week illness at the Ojai Raptor Center. Despite intensive medical care including blood transfusion and oxygen therapy, her severe anemia and kidney inflammation proved fatal. Her death deeply affected millions of fans worldwide who saw her as a symbol of wildlife recovery and resilience.
Quick Facts
- Jackie was found grounded near Big Bear Lake following a fight with two other eagles
- Jackie was transferred to Ojai Raptor Center for intensive medical care
- Jackie received a blood transfusion from Spirit
- Jackie received oxygen therapy and supportive treatment
- Jackie died in early morning hours on Monday

Jackie, the bald eagle whose life with her mate Shadow captivated millions through a live-streamed nest camera, died Monday morning after three weeks of intensive medical care at the Ojai Raptor Center in California.
The 14-year-old eagle was rescued on July 17 near Big Bear Lake after being found grounded following a fight with two other eagles. Upon arrival at the raptor center, veterinarians diagnosed her with severe anemia and kidney inflammation. Despite treatment including a blood transfusion from another eagle named Spirit, oxygen therapy, and around-the-clock monitoring by a team of nine veterinarians and specialists, Jackie's condition continued to deteriorate. Her packed cell volume—a measure of red blood cells—fell to critically low levels (6% on Saturday, rising slightly to 9% on Sunday), far below the normal range of 35–55% for bald eagles.
Jackie and Shadow became internet sensations after the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley installed a nest camera in 2015. Over more than a decade, the livestream documented their breeding cycles, including the successful raising of six eaglets: Simba (2019), Spirit (2022), Sunny and Gizmo (2023), and Luna and Sandy (2024). The pair's resilience through challenges—from raven attacks on eggs to winter storms—resonated with fans worldwide, many of whom described Jackie as a symbol of hope, devotion, and wildlife recovery.
The Ojai Raptor Center acknowledged the global grief in its statement: "We know this news will be deeply felt by the many thousands of people around the world who have followed her journey, hoped alongside us, prayed for her, and supported the people caring for her. Our team is heartbroken."
Jackie's death carries broader significance for wildlife conservation. Biologist Kelly Sorenson of the Ventana Wildlife Society noted that Jackie and Shadow's successful breeding exemplified the recovery of American bald eagles from near-extinction. The species, once endangered due to DDT pesticide use and habitat loss, was removed from the federal endangered species list following the pesticide's ban in the 1970s and subsequent protections. Jackie's public story, observed through live camera feeds, connected millions of people emotionally to that conservation success.
Jackie's remains have been transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The future of Shadow and their nest remains uncertain.

Why This Matters
Jackie's death impacts wildlife storytelling and public engagement with conservation. Her livestreamed nest generated measurable global audience for over a decade and directly supported the Friends of Big Bear Valley nonprofit's conservation work. The documented breeding success of six eaglets contributed to scientific understanding of bald eagle population recovery—a species that transitioned from federal endangered species list protection to delisting following 1972 DDT pesticide ban. Her public story connected millions to tangible conservation outcomes; her loss closes a major platform for ongoing wildlife education and species monitoring.
