Chelsea goalkeeper Martinez breaks jaw in collision, undergoes surgery

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez suffered a fractured jaw during a Premier League match against Everton on Saturday at Hill Dickinson Stadium, requiring hospitalization and surgery. The 34-year-old Argentina international collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite in the 67th minute while attempting to punch away a free kick. Both players went to ground following the head-to-head impact, but Branthwaite recovered quickly while Martinez remained motionless and required eight minutes of on-field treatment before being stretchered from the pitch with a neck brace and receiving oxygen.

Martinez was taken to hospital where he underwent successful jaw surgery. He posted on social media the following day confirming the operation went well and stating he expects to return "in a few weeks." Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirmed Martinez was conscious when leaving the stadium. The incident caused an 11-minute stoppage in play, during which 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders came on to make his Premier League debut as a substitute.

Despite the serious injury, Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory with Pedro Neto scoring twice. The result marked Chelsea's first clean sheet since January. Penders is expected to start Chelsea's next matches against Tottenham and Manchester United in the Premier League, with a Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool scheduled between them. Alonso expressed confidence in the young goalkeeper, describing him as having "personality" and "bravery."
