Lord of the Rings: War in the North remaster launches unannounced across PC, consoles

Aspyr Media has surprise-launched The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition, a remastered version of the 2011 action RPG originally developed by Snowblind Studios. The release occurred on 11 August 2026 across PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game is priced at $19.99 USD (£18.99 GBP, R$53.99 BRL) with a 10% launch discount available until 24 August for PlayStation Plus subscribers and other platforms.

The Legacy Edition includes enhanced graphics supporting 4K resolution at 60 frames per second on compatible platforms, improved interface systems, automatic saves, an enhanced target-lock combat system, and Brazilian Portuguese subtitles. The remaster introduces solo-play optimizations, allowing players to alternate between characters and manage an AI-controlled group more easily. The game supports online co-op for up to three players and local split-screen co-op (though not available on standard Nintendo Switch).

Players control three customizable characters—Eradan (Dúnedain Ranger), Andriel (Elven mage), and Farin (Dwarven warrior)—through a narrative set parallel to the events of The Lord of the Rings Fellowship. The story centers on Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean servant of Sauron who has gathered forces in the ruins of Fornost. The campaign features recognizable locations including Rivendell, Lothlórien, the Lonely Mountain, and Mirkwood, with appearances by characters like Aragorn, Gandalf, and Elrond. Players can summon Beleram, a Great Eagle, during specific battles.

The remaster represents a significant accessibility restoration: the original game was delisted from Steam in 2019 and had remained unavailable on modern platforms. The original 2011 release received mixed reviews, with a Metacritic score of 61, praised for its authentic Lord of the Rings setting but criticized for repetitive gameplay, dull level design, and reported bugs. Aspyr Media has announced plans to release additional classic Lord of the Rings games in the future.

The surprise announcement and immediate availability reflect a departure from typical release patterns, with observers noting the strategy may leverage impulse purchases from Tolkien fans.
