Arsenal accelerates Alvarez pursuit after World Cup starring role

Arsenal is intensifying efforts to sign Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez before pre-season ends, following the 26-year-old's decisive performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Álvarez scored a brilliant curling goal in extra time to secure Argentina's 3-1 quarter-final victory over Switzerland on July 12, propelling the team toward a semi-final clash with England. The goal came after a subdued start to the tournament in which he had lost his starting position to Lautaro Martínez.

Mikel Arteta has identified Álvarez as his primary attacking target, and Arsenal's position has strengthened as competition has narrowed. Paris Saint-Germain, previously a serious contender with offers reportedly between €140–150 million, has cooled its interest. Atlético Madrid has also made clear its reluctance to sell to Spanish rivals Barcelona or Real Madrid, effectively removing those clubs as viable buyers despite Barcelona's stated preference and Real Madrid's earlier €150 million bid. Arsenal, by contrast, is open to Álvarez and has positioned itself as an accessible option amid the complicated European landscape.

Negotiations remain challenging. Atlético has valued Álvarez at over €150 million and holds a €500 million release clause, though the market expects this to be negotiable. Arsenal's previous ceiling of approximately £90 million falls short of Atlético's demands of over £100 million. Álvarez rejected a contract renewal with Atlético worth approximately €58.5 million per season, signalling his determination to leave the club. The deal is further complicated by Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta negotiating with his former employer.

Arsenal faces parallel transfer challenges. The club remains interested in Aston Villa winger Morgan Rogers as an alternative attacking option, though that deal would exceed £100 million. The protracted nature of World Cup transfers has delayed progress on multiple fronts, though Arsenal hopes to resolve the Álvarez situation before pre-season training concludes.
