Union Minister George Kurian Resigns as Rajya Sabha Term Concludes

Union Minister George Kurian has stepped down from his position in the central cabinet, following the end of his Rajya Sabha term. His resignation was formally accepted by the President. Kurian, who served as Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Fisheries, and Animal Husbandry in the third Modi government since June 9, 2024, had informed the central leadership of his intention to return to organizational work.

Although the party has not officially clarified whether he will work at the national level or in Kerala, indications suggest Kurian has expressed a desire to focus his efforts in his home state. He had previously contested the assembly election from Kanjirappally but was unsuccessful. Kurian has held various roles within the BJP, including state vice president, national executive committee member, core committee member, and party spokesperson.

Before becoming a minister, Kurian served as an Officer on Special Duty when O. Rajagopal was a Union Minister. His tenure as Rajya Sabha member was not renewed, leading to his decision to resign from the cabinet. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a visit to West Bengal, is expected to further discuss the transition upon his return.
