Ryukyu Shimpo, a major Okinawan newspaper publisher, has released a new book titled "Today's Okinawa Battle 1945: 120-Character Daily Records, 172 Days of Testimony" on June 1, 2026. The publication chronicles the 172-day period from the U.S. military landing in late March 1945 through the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on September 7, 1945, in a day-by-day format.
The book is based on content that Ryukyu Shimpo serialized across its front page and website from March to September 2025. Each entry is written as a compact 120-character narrative covering what occurred on that specific day during the battle, designed to be read in approximately 30 seconds. Rather than presenting a dry chronological record, the book incorporates direct quotations and testimonies from the period, creating a narrative-driven documentary format that emphasizes the perspectives and experiences of ordinary civilians over military strategy.
The publication is notable for its inclusion of testimony and records on every single day of the conflict, extending beyond June's end when organized combat operations officially ceased, thereby capturing the full scope of civilian experiences throughout the battle. The book features approximately 96 pages in A5 format and is richly illustrated with archival photographs, maps, and resources from both Japanese and American historical documents, as well as materials from the Ryukyu Shimpo archives, designed to help readers understand the progression of the war.
The book is priced at 1,430 yen (including tax) and is available through the Ryukyu Shimpo Store online platform as well as at bookstores throughout Okinawa Prefecture. The publication comes ahead of June 23, which marks "Okinawa Memorial Day" in Japan, an annual observance commemorating the lives lost during the 1945 Battle of Okinawa.
