Huawei announced on Thursday that it will launch its next-generation Ascend 960DT AI chip in the first quarter of 2027, advancing the release by three quarters from the original schedule. The company also plans to introduce the Ascend 960PR chip in the third quarter of 2027, one quarter ahead of plan. David Wang, Huawei's rotating chairman, disclosed the accelerated timeline at the company's annual Huawei Connect conference in Shanghai.

The accelerated schedule reflects Huawei's strategy to develop larger AI computing systems using its Peerium Computing Architecture, which integrates hundreds of thousands or millions of AI chips into unified systems. The architecture relies on UnifiedBus, Huawei's interconnect technology for linking processors, memory, storage, and networking hardware. According to the company, its Atlas 950 SuperCluster systems can connect up to 256,000 accelerator cards, with the largest superclusters reportedly capable of connecting up to 1 million AI processors.

Wang indicated that Huawei intends to maintain a cadence of releasing one new chip generation annually, with the Ascend 970 planned for 2028 and Ascend 980 for 2029. Huawei has also developed a new generation of near-package optical (NPO) interconnect products scheduled for mass production.

The announcement occurs amid ongoing U.S. export restrictions on advanced semiconductor technology to China. Despite these constraints, Chinese technology companies are accelerating domestic AI chip development. Huawei's ecosystem reportedly includes thousands of active developers. Analysts note that while Huawei's chip advancement is substantial, there are questions about system scaling—one analyst observed that the newly announced Atlas 960 SuperPoD references 4,096 chips, compared to the previously stated 15,488-chip configuration.

Nvidia remains the global leader in AI processors, with its GPUs and software widely adopted by developers worldwide. Nvidia's market access in China has been limited by U.S. restrictions, with only constrained shipments of its H200 chips permitted. Other Chinese AI chip startups, including Tencent-backed Enflame Technology, are also accelerating development efforts.
