The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an urgent recall for 13 pre-packaged fruit products distributed by supplier PrepWorld across six major UK supermarkets following the detection of Salmonella contamination. Testing identified the bacteria in apples and kiwi fruit used in the products, prompting the immediate withdrawal from Tesco, Sainsbury's, M&S, Waitrose, Morrisons, and ASDA. All affected items carry use-by or best-before dates of 23 or 24 June 2026.
The recalled products span multiple formats including ready-to-eat fruit pots, snack packs, and fruit kebabs. Tesco has the highest number of affected items with four products, including a 250g Melon, Kiwi & Strawberry pot (£2.50), a 100g Kiwi Fruit Pot (£1.50), a 290g Fruit Kebabs pack (£4.10), and a 125g Melon, Kiwi & Strawberry pack (£1.50). Sainsbury's and M&S each have three recalled products, predominantly apple-based items, while ASDA, Morrisons, and Waitrose each have one affected product ranging in price from £1.50 to £2.75.
Salmonella is a leading cause of food poisoning globally, typically triggering symptoms including fever, diarrhoea, and stomach cramps. Symptoms usually develop within hours or days of consuming contaminated food, though in some cases may take weeks to appear. The FSA has emphasised that young children, adults aged 65 and over, and those with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of serious illness. The NHS advises affected individuals to stay at home for 48 hours to avoid transmission, avoid schools and workplaces, and maintain hydration with rest and over-the-counter pain relief as needed.
Consumers who have purchased the affected products are urged not to consume them and to return items to their retail store of purchase for a full refund, with no receipt required. Point-of-sale notices are being displayed in all stores selling the recalled products to inform customers of the withdrawal. This recall follows a similar incident twelve months earlier when Lidl withdrew Sol & Mar Chicharricos BBQ Pork Scratchings due to potential Salmonella contamination.
Why This Matters
This recall affects millions of UK shoppers who may have purchased these widely available fruit products from major retailers. Salmonella contamination poses serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations including children under five, adults over 65, and immunocompromised individuals. Understanding which specific products to check, where to return them, and what symptoms to watch for is critical for protecting yourself and your family. The broad distribution across six major supermarket chains means nearly every UK household should verify their recent fruit purchases.
