Bhuvneshwar Kumar Returns to India T20I Squad After Four Years
India has recalled 36-year-old fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the New Zealand T20I series, marking his return to international cricket after a four-year absence. His selection follows strong performances in the IPL, where he took 45 wickets across the 2025 and 2026 seasons for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Quick Facts
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar recalled to India T20I squad
- India announced squad for New Zealand T20I series
- Varun Chakravarthy returns after injury
- Jasprit Bumrah rested for workload management
- India to play 5 T20Is, 5 ODIs, and 2 Tests in New Zealand

India has recalled fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand, ending a four-year absence from international cricket. The 36-year-old last represented India in the T20I format in November 2022 during a tour of New Zealand. His inclusion in the squad announced on October 6, 2026, marks a significant selection decision as India prepares for five T20 matches scheduled to run from October 22 to November 1.
Kumar's return is primarily attributed to his standout performances in the Indian Premier League over the past two seasons. Playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he claimed 17 wickets in the 2025 season and 28 wickets in 2026—totaling 45 wickets across the two campaigns. In the 2026 IPL season, he took 28 wickets across 16 matches with a bowling average of 17.89 and an economy rate of 7.95, finishing as the second-leading wicket-taker in the tournament.
The selection reflects India's assessment that Kumar's swing bowling expertise, particularly his ability to move the ball both ways with the new ball, remains valuable in New Zealand conditions where such skills are often decisive. Former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik praised selectors for showing "courage" in recalling Kumar after such a long gap, noting that his specific skill set in generating swing and handling pressure situations in death overs is not readily available elsewhere in the Indian fast-bowling attack. Jasprit Bumrah was rested for the series to manage his workload ahead of the subsequent Test series.
The selection also saw the return of spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who missed competition due to injury. India's full T20I squad is led by captain Shreyas Iyer and includes Tilak Varma as vice-captain. Following the T20I series, India will play five ODI matches and a two-Test series in New Zealand. The selection process was chaired by interim chairman of selectors Pragyan Ojha, following the exit of previous chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
Why This Matters
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's recall after four years addresses India's T20I fast-bowling depth ahead of the five-match New Zealand series (October 22–November 1, 2026). The selection signals confidence in swing-bowling capability in southern hemisphere conditions while resting Jasprit Bumrah for workload management before the subsequent Test series. Team composition, rotation strategy, and bowling attack structure directly affect tournament outcomes and player availability across formats.
