Tom Holland Reveals He Told Zendaya About Robert Downey Jr.'s Marvel Return as Doctor Doom

Tom Holland has disclosed that he shared the news of Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom with his wife, Zendaya, immediately after learning it from Downey himself. The admission came during a joint interview with Cinemania, where Holland detailed how he received the call from Downey and promptly informed Zendaya, saying, “Downey is coming back.” Despite his well-known reputation for accidentally spoiling Marvel plot details, Holland kept this major secret from the public, only confiding in his spouse.

Holland, who portrays Spider-Man Peter Parker, explained that he has limited knowledge of the upcoming films, noting that the studio deliberately keeps him in the dark to prevent leaks. “I have a reputation for spoiling certain things and I think the studio is keeping me from the juicy details,” he said. He expressed curiosity about how Downey's return as Doctor Doom will affect his own character's storyline, adding, “When I do get to grace that set, I am so curious what does that mean for Peter and how does that work. It’s really cool. I am really excited about whatever it is they are doing.”

This revelation comes as Holland and Zendaya promote their latest film, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” set for release on July 31. The couple, who have been making international press appearances, also confirmed earlier this year that they are married. They are additionally set to appear together in Christopher Nolan's upcoming film “The Odyssey,” which opens on July 17.

Holland reflected on his relationship with Zendaya, telling Esquire, “Our business can present very stressful situations and it’s really nice to have a bedrock of a relationship that will stand the test of time... I found my person. She’s my best friend, and I’m the happiest I ever have been when I’m with her, but I also have never felt so supported and safe, ever. Period.”

Downey Jr.'s return to the Marvel franchise was officially announced for the film “Avengers: Doomsday,” marking his role as the villain Doctor Doom. Holland confirmed on the “Rich Roll” podcast in 2024 that he was among a select few who knew of Downey's comeback, calling it a difficult secret to keep. The news has generated significant excitement among fans, with speculation about how Doctor Doom will intersect with Spider-Man's story.
