Hong Kong Holds State Funeral for First Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa

Hong Kong held a state funeral on Sunday, September 20, 2026, for Tung Chee-hwa, the city's first chief executive following the 1997 handover from British rule to China. Tung died on September 8 at age 89. The memorial service, held at Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point, began at 9 a.m. and was attended by approximately 200 guests, including senior Chinese officials, Hong Kong political leaders, and representatives from various sectors of society.

Tung served as chief executive from 1997 to 2005, leading Hong Kong through significant challenges including the 1997–1998 Asian financial crisis, the 2003 SARS epidemic that killed nearly 300 people in the city, and major public protests. In 2003, an estimated 500,000 people protested the government's proposed anti-treason law, which was subsequently shelved. Tung resigned in 2005, citing health reasons. After stepping down, he was appointed vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and received national honors in 2019.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and other top central leaders, including Premier Li Qiang and former President Hu Jintao, expressed deep grief and extended condolences to Tung's family. Shi Taifeng, a member of the Communist Party's Political Bureau, delivered the eulogy and praised Tung as "a close friend of the party" and "a renowned patriot." Official statements described Tung as an outstanding contributor to the "one country, two systems" framework, an outstanding social activist, and a patriot.

Tung's coffin, draped in the Chinese national flag, was moved to Cape Collinson Crematorium in Chai Wan following the service. Pallbearers included Leung Chun-ying, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee; Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu; and Xu Qifang, executive deputy director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office. Members of the public paid condolences at three venues set up across the city, with some residents recalling his "85,000" annual public housing target and describing him as a humble and visionary leader.

The funeral was the third state funeral in Hong Kong since 1997. While Tung was critically ill, central authorities expressed deep concern and instructed the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong to convey best wishes and demand all-out medical efforts. Tung, a shipping magnate by background, is regarded as a key figure in Hong Kong's post-handover governance during a transformative period for the city.
