Two men on a motorcycle approached Gastélum and two companions, who were dressed as food delivery workers as part of a social media challenge. Video footage captured by the livestream and security cameras shows one of the attackers firing a gun at close range, killing Gastélum instantly. Gastélum was known for creating comedy and lifestyle content across multiple platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and the streaming platform Kick, where he used the username "compasexor." He posted videos featuring comedic sketches, character parodies, musical covers, and gaming content. On his social media accounts, he also shared images of luxury vehicles and travel experiences. In December 2024, he had posted a tribute at the grave of another influencer, Leobardo Aispuro (known as "El Gordo Peruci"), who was killed in Sinaloa.

Mexican authorities launched an investigation into the killing and stated that Gastélum had posted social media content referencing criminal factions. Mexico's Federal Security Cabinet indicated on Wednesday that some of his videos "alluded to a faction of a criminal group," though officials did not name any specific organization or provide further details. A pamphlet of unverified authenticity had previously linked Gastélum to Los Chapitos, one of the warring factions of the Sinaloa Cartel. The livestream video was later removed by the platform, though footage continued circulating on social media.

President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the killing on Wednesday, stating that "perpetrators must be arrested" and calling for authorities to investigate the reasons behind the homicide. The attack took place amid ongoing violence in Culiacán stemming from territorial conflicts between Los Chapitos and Los Mayos, rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel that have clashed since September 2024. Local media reported that approximately a dozen influencers have been killed in Sinaloa in recent years, some allegedly linked to criminal organizations.

Gastélum's death parallels the May 2025 killing of Mexican beauty influencer Valeria Márquez, 23, who was shot dead during a TikTok livestream at a salon in Zapopan, Jalisco. In July 2026, authorities arrested Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, identified as a leader of a criminal cell linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), in connection with Márquez's murder and the November 2025 assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo.
