Bangkok Bar Fire Kills 27, Emergency Exits Blocked by Furniture

A fire at Na Ladprao bar in northern Bangkok's Chatuchak district on the night of July 12, 2026, killed at least 27 people and injured 63 others, with 22 in critical condition. The blaze broke out around 11:57 PM local time and was brought under control within 30 minutes by firefighters. Among the deceased were 18 women and 9 men; only 6 had been identified as of July 13.

Initial investigation by Bangkok's disaster prevention office determined the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in the ceiling-mounted air conditioning unit. The fire spread with extreme rapidity from the stage area, with witnesses describing the flames engulfing the building within seconds. The rapid spread was aided by flammable soundproofing foam materials in the ceiling and interior, which released toxic gases upon combustion. Medical officials report that most fatalities were likely caused by smoke inhalation rather than direct burns, with victims found clustered in restrooms and narrow hallways where they had sought refuge.

A critical factor in the high death toll was the obstruction of emergency exits. Bangkok's governor reported that two evacuation doors were blocked—one near the kitchen was obstructed by beer crates, while another was blocked by a table. The bar's main entrance was extremely narrow and became congested as patrons rushed to escape, creating a bottleneck. An eyewitness account from a bar manager described how, after initial flames were observed near the stage signage, the fire erupted violently within five seconds, with approximately 200 customers inside at the time. Although the venue had four designated exits, the combination of blocked emergency doors, poor lighting due to power loss, and the rapid smoke accumulation left many patrons unable to escape.

The incident marks one of Thailand's deadliest nightclub fires since 2009, when 67 people died in a Santika club fire on New Year's Day, also in Bangkok. That prior disaster was similarly attributed to rapid ceiling fire spread through flammable interior materials and a single narrow main exit. The 2026 fire has prompted authorities to conduct detailed forensic investigations and raises questions about venue safety compliance and maintenance of fire safety systems.
