A 65-year-old parking attendant in Brebes, Central Java, thwarted an attempted theft of Rp 3.6 billion (approximately $250,000) from a bank customer's vehicle on Monday, June 15, 2026. The suspect used a car window-smashing modus operandi to steal the cash but fled empty-handed after the attendant raised the alarm.
The victim, Kliwon Alwawan, a resident of Kluwut Village in Bulakamba District, had just withdrawn the funds from Bank BCA Brebes. He became suspicious when he noticed several motorcyclists tailing his vehicle. To ensure his safety, he drove to a Bank BTN office nearby and went inside.
While Kliwon was inside the bank, one of the suspects smashed the window of his black Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and grabbed a plastic bag containing the money. Parking attendant Kusriyati witnessed the act and immediately shouted for help. "I saw someone break the car window and take a plastic bag from inside. I shouted, 'Thief, thief!'" Kusriyati said.
Her cries drew the attention of local residents, causing the suspect to panic and flee on a motorcycle without the money. Some of the cash was scattered on the road but was later secured by the crowd. Another parking attendant, Jari, said he had noticed a man on a white Vario motorcycle acting suspiciously and had even confronted him shortly before the incident.
The failed heist highlights the vigilance of ordinary citizens in preventing crime. The police have launched an investigation into the incident, reviewing CCTV footage to identify the suspects.
Why This Matters
This event demonstrates how ordinary vigilance can prevent large-scale financial crime, especially in high-cash economies like Indonesia where bank withdrawals remain common. For readers, it highlights the importance of staying alert in public places, not hesitating to call for help, and the role community watchfulness plays in deterring theft. It also underscores the need for banks and customers to adopt more secure cash-handling practices, such as using escorts or electronic transfers, to reduce the risk of armed robbery near bank premises.
