Agence France-Presse (AFP) has launched MediaGen, an ambitious 24-month generative artificial intelligence project designed to develop trustworthy AI tools for French and international media outlets. Backed by a €4 million budget and selected under France's France 2030 investment plan, the project is supported by the French Public Investment Bank (BPI) and brings together a consortium of leading French technology companies: start-ups Quivr and Kairntech, specialising in AI tool design and deployment, and Dawex, a data exchange solutions provider.
The project will develop three primary tools aimed at enhancing newsroom capabilities while maintaining editorial control and ethical standards. An enhanced news monitoring system will gather and analyse content from multiple sources including media outlets, social networks, and press releases in real time. Advanced multimodal search tools will enable journalists to explore and extract value from text, photo, and video archives. A third tool will assist with content production by facilitating multi-format distribution and identifying potential biases that could undermine news quality.
MediaGen emphasises collaborative development and responsible AI innovation. Various news organisations will participate in initial requirement assessment phases, with some technologies eventually released under open-source licences for the broader media sector, while others will be commercialised. The project leverages Dawex's proven data exchange technology to ensure that all newsflows are contracted, traced, and secure, addressing key concerns about data integrity and compliance.
Leaders from partner organisations expressed confidence in the initiative's potential. AFP Chairman and CEO Fabrice Fries stated that "MediaGen is one of the few France 2030 projects devoted to the media. It must demonstrate that AI innovation can be used for reliable, responsible, and independent news." The consortium partners highlighted their commitment to advancing media technology responsibly, with applications extending beyond news organisations to include strategic monitoring dashboards for businesses and institutions in France and internationally.
