Houthis strike Riyadh airport; three killed, dozens injured

Two coordinated attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 8 killed three Saudi nationals and injured dozens of people of various nationalities, Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation confirmed on October 9. The first attack targeted airport facilities; the second struck a Saudia aircraft parked near the terminal. Among the dead was Captain Hamoud Ali Alkalthami, a pilot for the Saudi state-owned airline. The aircraft sustained serious damage and caught fire after being struck by a projectile or shrapnel, though there were no passengers on board at the time.

Yemen's Houthi group claimed responsibility for the strikes, with military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree stating on October 8 that the movement had launched two cruise missiles at King Khalid Airport and ballistic missiles at additional targets including Najran Airport and Khamis Mushait air base. The Iran-backed group said the attacks were in retaliation for Saudi military operations against Yemen and the country's blockade. Saudi Arabia's civil defense authorities reported that debris from intercepted missiles damaged a kindergarten and medical complex in Riyadh.

The strikes had immediate repercussions on regional aviation and energy markets. Multiple international carriers cancelled flights to Riyadh, including Lufthansa Group (through October 16), Air India (through October 11), flydubai, Qatar Airways, and Pakistan International Airlines. Oil prices spiked as markets reacted to the escalation. Airport operations resumed at 6:00 p.m. local time on October 8 and returned to normal by October 9.

The attacks occurred amid intensified fighting across Yemen and the Saudi-led coalition's reported destruction of numerous Houthi military targets. The Saudi-led coalition announced it had intercepted three missiles launched toward Riyadh and Khamis Mushait, and subsequently destroyed 136 military targets, including ballistic missile storage sites in mountain tunnels in Sanaa. Houthi-controlled media reported that Saudi airstrikes on Sanaa International Airport killed two airport employees and caused fires at four civilian facilities. UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg warned that Yemen had returned to "full-scale war," with hostilities spreading across multiple fronts.

The October 8 attacks followed earlier strikes on October 6–7 that killed three people at Abha and King Khalid airports. Analysts warn that continued military escalation risks further civilian casualties and damage to critical infrastructure, while regional tensions remain high over control of strategic locations including the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
