World Cup 2026 Records Highest Single-Day Attendance in Tournament History

The 2026 FIFA World Cup made history on Tuesday, June 16, by recording the highest single-day attendance in the tournament's history, drawing 281,223 fans across four matches. The figure surpassed the previous record of 277,070 spectators set on June 28, 1994, also during a World Cup held in the United States.

The record-breaking attendance was achieved during four matches held in different American cities. The match between France and Senegal in East Rutherford, New Jersey, drew 80,545 fans; Argentina and Algeria in Kansas City, Missouri, attracted 69,045 spectators; Austria and Jordan in Santa Clara, California, brought in 68,527 fans; and the Iraq-Norway match in Foxborough, Massachusetts, accounted for 63,106 attendees.

After six days of competition, the total cumulative attendance already stands at 1,309,652 spectators, averaging 65,483 per match. This strong turnout puts the 2026 edition on track to surpass the cumulative attendance record set in 1994, which reached 3.5 million fans, according to FIFA.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised the massive turnout, stating: "What a crowd. 281,223 spectators in the World Cup stadiums today, the highest attendance in the history of the tournament." He added, "June 16, 2026, will be etched in World Cup history. I can only extend my heartfelt thanks to our fans for bringing joy, passion, and immense emotion to this tournament. The 2026 World Cup, the most inclusive ever, confirms how much we love football and how it unites the world."
