A major step forward in expanding capacity at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) has been taken with the signing of a public works contract for a new 96-bed inpatient ward block. The Health Service Executive (HSE) has awarded the contract to John Sisk & Son for the delivery of the facility, known as Block B.
The development marks the second 96-bed ward block on the UHL campus, following the opening of a similar block in 2025. Two 16-bed rapid-build units were added in 2024 and 2025, and another 16-bed rapid-build unit is due for completion this year. A design team has also been appointed for a separate 66-bed block, indicating continued investment in healthcare infrastructure in the region.
A four-month pre-construction phase will now commence, with main construction work expected to begin in October and completion targeted for the final quarter of 2029. The new block is part of a broader plan to add a total of 420 new beds across the Mid-West region by 2031, with 114 additional beds planned for Ennis, Nenagh, and St. John’s Hospitals.
Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill welcomed the contract award, stating: "I know how important this project is for patients, staff and families in Limerick and across the Mid West. The award of this contract is another important step forward to increase much-needed inpatient bed capacity for the region. The 128 beds we have opened since the end of 2024 have already made a very positive contribution to UHL and the people of the Mid West, and the 'Block B' ward block will continue those positive improvements."
Local politicians also expressed support. Deputy Michael Lowry highlighted that the expansion will help address overcrowding, noting it will "go some way towards improving the unacceptable conditions at the Dooradoyle hospital." Minister of State for Older People Kieran O'Donnell TD added: "The awarding of the contract for the construction of the second 96-bed inpatient ward block marks a further significant milestone in the provision of additional bed capacity at University Hospital Limerick and will deliver enhanced healthcare services for patients, their families and staff in Limerick and the Mid West region."
Why This Matters
This contract means that the Mid-West region of Ireland is firmly on track to add 420 beds by 2031, directly addressing chronic overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick. For patients, it translates into shorter waiting times for inpatient care and improved conditions; for healthcare staff, it eases workload pressures. The involvement of major contractor John Sisk & Son and early start of construction in October signal that the plan is moving from design to delivery.
