Russia has begun full-cycle manufacturing of Volga vehicles at a factory in Nizhny Novgorod, marking a transition from component assembly to integrated production including welding and painting. The facility, which previously assembled Volkswagen and Skoda vehicles, now employs the same robotic equipment for Volga production. Approximately 80% of key welding operations are automated, with robots handling part movement, installation, and sealing to tolerances of 0.2 millimeters. The paint shop processes bodies through 19 stages including phosphating, cathodic priming, secondary primer, base enamel, and lacquer, with wax applied to hidden cavities. Software monitors over 200 parameters in real time, including equipment operation, workshop microclimate, and drying cycles. Air filtration in paint chambers meets 5-micron standards.
Quality control operates at multiple production stages. Welded bodies are periodically sampled for ultrasonic inspection of spot welds, metallographic analysis of joints, and full-body audits. Finished vehicles undergo hermetic sealing tests, headlight alignment verification, fastener torque measurement, and dynamic road testing. The factory holds ISO 9001 certification. Current Russian-sourced components include windshields, exhaust systems, wheels, batteries, telemetry modules, ERA-GLONASS blocks, sealants, and paint materials.
Localization will expand progressively: plastic exterior parts by end of 2026, body panel stamping by 2027, and engines and transmissions by 2028. Volga brand head Tatyana Fadeeva stated that "launching welding and painting is a step toward the next phase, aimed at developing a local component base, which is a necessary condition for transitioning to our own platform and forming a new model line." The Volga lineup currently comprises the K50 crossover, C50 sedan, and K40 compact crossover. Initial vehicles were produced in December 2025, with serial production beginning in April 2026. Welding and painting operations commenced in August 2026. The factory has a maximum capacity of 110,000 vehicles per year. The long-term strategic goal is phased development of Volga's own platform and next-generation model range.
