France captain Kylian Mbappe has pledged to improve his defensive contributions as the two-time world champions prepare for their World Cup 2026 opening match against Senegal. The 27-year-old Real Madrid striker acknowledged criticism of his defensive work during an interview with French newspaper La Parisien, stating that he is committed to elevating his effort in this area for the team's success.

"I need to take the extra step with my defensive work because it's something important for the team and I have to do it," Mbappe said. "It will start this time because we want to win, and to win, I'm ready to do whatever because I want to win at all costs." His commitment was prompted partly by playful ribbing from his younger brother Ethan, who plays for Ligue 1 side Lille, during the interview.

Mbappe's pledge comes against the backdrop of a challenging second season at Real Madrid. Despite finishing as La Liga's top scorer, defensive statistics reveal significant gaps in his game. According to Opta data, he ranked 1,350th out of 1,490 players across Europe's top five leagues with a minimum of 19 league appearances in combined interceptions, blocks, tackles made, and possession won. He recorded only 0.14 tackles per 90 minutes, the fifth-lowest rate in the rankings. The club also endured a trophyless season amid reports of dressing room tension and fan frustration.

Mbappe has faced scrutiny over both his performances and leadership at club and international level. However, teammate Ousmane Dembele publicly defended him, asserting that criticism had gone "too far." As France's captain since taking over from Hugo Lloris in 2023, Mbappe brings significant World Cup pedigree, having scored 12 goals in 14 World Cup matches, including a hat-trick in the 2022 final against Argentina. One additional goal would level him with Olivier Giroud as France's all-time leading World Cup scorer.
