Yemen's Houthi group launched a major attack on Saudi Arabia on Monday, September 14, 2026, firing dozens of ballistic missiles and drones at King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait, southwestern Saudi Arabia. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea stated in a televised address that the operation targeted fighter-jet hangars, radar systems, runways, ammunition depots, and other military facilities, claiming the strikes were "precise and direct" and caused significant damage. The group stated that international navigation through the strait would remain "free, safe and smooth," while maintaining an existing maritime ban on Saudi vessels that it imposed on July 20.
Houthi military spokesperson Sarea warned that the group would continue launching attacks deep inside Saudi territory as long as airstrikes on Yemen continued, stating that any further escalation would be met with broader military operations. The fighting has prompted significant civilian displacement, with the United Nations' migration agency reporting that since July, approximately 76,000 people had fled the conflict, with that figure quadrupling in a single week following the fall of Mocha. According to sources on both sides, the renewed fighting has killed more than 500 people.
